The Kraichtal overtaking station (formerly also Kraichtal overtaking station , before that Bauerbach overtaking station ) is the only overtaking station on the Mannheim – Stuttgart high-speed line . It is located two kilometers northeast of the town center of Bauerbach between Gochsheim , Büchig and Bauerbach and extends over the districts of the towns of Kraichtal and Bretten .

In addition to overhauls , the station is also used as a site for permanent way maintenance and can also be reached via the road network.

In the operating point directory , the railway system is listed under the name Kraichtal .

construction

The 38 m wide and 2,285 m long train station is located in a cut in the moving terrain of the Kraichgau . In the station area, the incision has a maximum width of 124 m and a maximum depth (above the top of the rails) of 18 m.

It lies between the route kilometers 53.4 and 56.4. The west head begins at km 54.580, the east head at km 55.920. At kilometer 54.433, the K3503 district road, including a pedestrian and bicycle path, crosses the railway systems on a bridge.

The station consists of five tracks : the two continuous main tracks of the high-speed line are connected to an overtaking track of 750 m usable length on each side. The eastern overtaking track is also followed by a 790 m long service track. A substation and signal box were also built in the east of the facility . At the north and south head of the facility, track changes that can be driven at 100 km / h allow you to switch to the other track. In the north there are also two further operating tracks (connection of a substation and a loading ramp).

The route runs towards Stuttgart largely in a right-hand curve, the gradient rises slightly to the south. The Simonsweingarten tunnel connects to the north and the Bauerbach viaduct to the south .

To the north of the track system is a signal box that is remote-controlled from Hockenheim train station . Next to it is a substation that is fed via a branch line from the Wiesental – Vaihingen traction power line . In the western part of the station in particular, there are noise barriers with a height of up to 3.00 m above the top of the rails.

In addition to the overtaking station, there are other overtaking options on the high-speed line in the Vaihingen (Enz) and Hockenheim stations .

history

planning

According to the planning status of new lines from 1973, a depot should be built to the southeast of the current location, in the southeastern connection to the Bauerbach viaduct (in the 59.5 km section at the time).

The planning approval procedure for the area of the Kraichgau hill country, to which the overtaking station belongs, was initiated in April 1975. Later, a new procedure was initiated that took into account previously raised objections - in particular from the area of nature and landscape protection.

On March 6, 1979 the public hearing for the planning approval sections 6b (Kraichtal) and 7a (Bruchsal) took place.

construction

In the summer of 1987, the earthworks contract for the section between the Simonsweingarten tunnel and the Bauerbach viaduct was awarded. Work began in autumn 1987 with the clearing of the construction site. The earthworks at the station began in August 1988 after delays due to a prolonged rainy season and were completed at the end of 1988. In February 1989 the installation of the frost protection layer was completed. Completion was planned for spring 1989 (as of April 1989). In the construction phase, a construction track was also set up east of the overtaking station on the Heilbronn – Karlsruhe line .

For the construction work, the district road (K 3503) had to be relocated over a length of around 2.3 km and led over the station with a bridge. A total of around 650,000 m³ of soil was excavated and 200,000 m³ were re-applied. Excavation that could not be used for dams in the same construction lot was used to backfill the open-cut Altenberg and Simonsweingarten tunnels.

business

On June 13, 2020, some wagons of a train that was supposed to bring the large turnout parts to the installation site derailed in the station.
