Česlovas Juršėnas (born May 18, 1938 in Panižiškė, Ignalina Rajongemeinde ) is a Lithuanian journalist and politician , former President and Vice-President of the Lithuanian Parliament ( Seimas ).

Life

In 1955 Juršėnas graduated from Ignalina Middle School ; In 1960 he completed a journalism -Studies at Vilnius University from. In 1973 he graduated from the CPSU party college in Leningrad . He later taught at the Vilnius Party School .

From 1960 he worked as a journalist , 1960–1964 for the daily newspaper Tiesa (German: Truth) and from 1964 for the Lithuanian television as editor of the foreign news. In 1968 he became editor-in-chief in the newsroom. Since 1973 he was active in the Communist Party in various functions as commissioner for press and propaganda , a task that he also took over in the first government of independent Lithuania (1990-92). With the transformation of the KPL into the Democratic Labor Party of Lithuania , he became its deputy chairman, from 1995 until the merger with the LSDP its chairman.

1990-1992 he was a member of the Supreme Soviet ( Aukščiausioji Taryba ), from 1992 to 2012 a member of the Seima . After Algirdas Brazauskas was elected as the new president , he took over his office as parliamentary chairman from 1993 to 1996. From 1996 he was deputy chairman of parliament and from 6 April to 11 July 2004 again interim parliamentary chairman, after the parliamentary chairman Artūras Paulauskas served temporarily as president after the impeachment of Rolandas Paksas . From 2006 to 2008 he was the first deputy chairman of parliament. From April 2008 to November 2008 he was chairman again, then as vice chairman of the Seimas.

He is a member of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party , of which he was the first vice-chairman of that party from 2001 to 2004. Today he sits on the party's presidium. Juršėnas was a sports official, president of the Lithuanian Chess Federation.

Juršėnas speaks Russian, English and German.

Juršėnas is married to Jadvyga. His son Saulius Juršėnas is a professor at Vilnius University .
