İhsan Ketin

İhsan Ketin (born April 10, 1914 in Kayseri , † December 16, 1995 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish geologist. He dealt in particular with the tectonics of Turkey and the faults that are the cause of earthquakes there.

Life

Ketin studied natural sciences with a focus on geology at the Humboldt University in Berlin on a scholarship and received his doctorate in 1934 under Hans Cloos at the University of Bonn . In 1938 he became an assistant professor at Istanbul University . In 1953 he became Professor of General Geology in the Faculty of Mining Science of Istanbul Technical University . In 1983 he retired.

When the great Erzincan earthquake in Turkey claimed around 33,000 deaths on December 27, 1939 , he turned to earthquake research and investigated the triggering North Anatolian fault .

In 1988 he received the Gustav Steinmann Medal . He was an honorary doctor of the University of Bonn (1988), an honorary member of the Geological Society of America and the Geological Society of London (1984). He was also an honorary member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences . In 1981 he received the Hamit-Nafiz-Pamir Prize of the Geological Society of Turkey and in 1981 the Science Prize of TÜBITAK .
