İlhan Özbay (born September 19, 1982 in Şefaatli , Yozgat ) is a former Turkish football player and coach.

Player career

İlhan Özbay started club football in the youth of Yozgatspor . In 2000 he received a professional contract here, but played one season mostly for the reserve team. It was not until March 2001 that he became involved in the professional squad and made five Süper Lig games. He started his second season at Yozgatspor again with the reserve team, but was then brought to the professional team from November and played continuously until the end of the season.

Since Yozgatspor missed relegation at the end of the 2001/02 season, Özbay moved to Gaziantepspor within the league . Here he made the leap into the starting line-up straight away and made fourth place in the table with his new team at the end of the season. After he played here until the winter break of 2005/06, he left Gaziantepspor and went to league rivals Kayseri Erciyesspor . The main reason for this change was Hüseyin Kalpar's attitude as a coach . Kalper stated that he wasn't planning with Özbay. At the end of the season Kalpaer left Gaziantepspor and so Özbay was brought back to the team.

At Erciyesspor he immediately became a top performer. After his club could not hold the class in the 2006/07 season, he remained loyal to his club for the coming season and played second class from then on.

In February 2008, his old coach Nurullah Sağlam took over the coaching post again at Gaziantepspor and brought Özbay back on loan as one of his first positions in office. At the end of the season Özbay left Gaziantepspor and extended his contract with Erciyesspor. In January 2009, he moved again to Gaziantepspor, including the transfer fee.

For the new season, a new coach was hired in José Couceiro . After the preparatory camp, he sorted out Özbay for the upcoming season. So Özbay moved to the second division Bucaspor . His stay at Bucaspor only lasted half a season. Özbay then moved to Sakaryaspor within the league . With his new club, he did not succeed in relegation, so Özbay played in the 2010/11 season in the third-highest Turkish league.

During the winter break of the 2011/12 season, he came to an agreement with the then Turkish second division club Mersin İdman Yurdu SK and switched to the TFF 1st Lig . He was brought here at the request of the coach Nurullah Sağlam , with whom Özgür already worked at Gaziantepspor. At Mersin İY he won a regular place in the professional team straight away. He finished the 2010/11 season with his team as champions of the 1st Lig and thus achieved direct promotion to the Süper Lig . After his contract expired at the end of the 2011/12 season, he left Mersin İY.

In the summer of 2012 he moved to the second division Denizlispor . But after only a month, the contract was terminated by mutual agreement. In the 2013/14 season he played for the amateur club Sorgun Belediyespor and ended his career here in the summer of 2104.

Coaching career

Immediately after his playing career, he took over his last club, Sorgun Belediyespor, as head coach.
