ʿAbd ar-Razzāq as-Sanhūrī

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ʿAbd ar-Razzāq as-Sanhūrī ( Arabic عبد الرزاق السنهوري; born 1895 in Alexandria ; died 1971 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian lawyer and scholar who is widely considered to be the most prominent lawyer in modern Egyptian history. His name is inextricably linked to the revised Egyptian Civil Law Code of 1948, which was by no means his only contribution to Egyptian legal culture.

Life

Sanhuri was a judge at the mixed court in al-Mansura , then from 1949 to 1954 President of the Egyptian State Council .

He belonged to the Saʿdī party , which had been formed after a falling out within the Wafd party .

His extensive al-Wasīṭ fī šarḥ al-qānūn al-madanī al-ǧadīd (Intermediate Commentary on the New Civil Law Code) is a commentary on the New Civil Code ( al-Qānūn al-madanī ).

In the 1920s he studied with the French lawyer Édouard Lambert , who also wrote the foreword to his early French-language works, including the work on the caliphate ( Le Califat , 1926), and later worked with him.

In addition to Egypt , he was also involved in the codification of law in other Arab countries ( Iraq , Syria and Libya ).

His memoirs were published by his daughter Nadia and were published in Cairo by Dar Al-Shuruq .
