¥ is a character . It is represented as a capital Y with a double slash , the top of which crosses the fork of the Y. In some fonts , the ¥ character has just a single slash.

¥ was originally designed as a currency symbol . It is used for two currencies: Yen ( Japan ) and Renminbi ( People's Republic of China ).
In the book timetable of DB Netz AG , the symbol ¥ is used to mark the end of the subsequent turnout area when leaving a train station or driving at a junction.
origin
The Y is the first letter of the word Yen . The two dashes are supposed to symbolize economic security.
Presentation on the computer
In ISO 8859-1 the character occupies the position 0xA5. In Unicode, the ¥ is included at code point U + 00A5 and in full-width form at code point U + FFE5.
In Shift JIS, the full-width form occupies position 0x818F. Depending on the Shift-JIS implementation, the ¥ may have display problems. In code page 932 , for example, it occupies position 0x5C, which is otherwise assigned to the backslash and whose function it also exercises. Paths such as C: \ WINDOWS \ SYSTEM32 \ are displayed as C: ¥ WINDOWS ¥ SYSTEM32 ¥ under this code page .
