(1272) Gefion is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 10 October 1931 by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at Heidelberg State Observatory King chair of the University of Heidelberg was discovered.
The asteroid is namesake of the Gefion family, a group of asteroids of the central main belt, the members of which belong to the S-type. In the past, the group was also referred to as the Ceres family (after (1) Ceres , Vincenzo Zappalà 1995) and the Minerva family (after (93) Minerva ).
The name of the asteroid is derived from the Gefion fountain in the Danish capital, Copenhagen . Gefion is a character from Norse mythology.
