location
The city is located about 650 km east of Moscow and 90 km south of the republic capital Yoshkar-Ola , on the left bank of the Volga River in the area of the Kuibyshev reservoir . The closest city is Volzhsk ; this is about 20 km as the crow flies from Swenigowo.
history
The place was established in 1860 as a Volga settlement with a ship landing stage and a shipyard. The place was particularly suitable for the parking of ships over winter, as there was a small bay here at the mouth of the small river Sweniga (from which Swenigowo also takes its name). At first the village had only a few barracks for the workers on the pier. By the end of the 19th century, however, the shipyard had developed into a larger operation that attracted workers from outside the country. At the beginning of the 20th century, Zvenigowo was already an industrial center.
In the 1920s and 1930s Zvenigowo was further industrialized after a territorial reform and the formation of the raion of the same name , of which it became the center; Among other things, the shipyard was expanded and new infrastructure objects were built. Swenigowo received city status in 1974.
