Wolschsk ( Russian Волжск , Mari Юлсер-Ола / Julser-Ola ) is a city in the Republic of Mari El ( Russia ) with 55,659 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 100 km southeast of the republic capital Yoshkar-Ola on the left bank of the Volga ( Kuibyshev reservoir ), about 5 km southeast of the mouth of the Ilet .

Wolschsk is administratively directly subordinate to the republic and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

According to documents from the 16th and 17th centuries, there was a Russian settlement Lopatin and Lopatino in the area of ​​today's city . In 1940 the place was given city rights under its current name.
