The Ilet ( Russian Илеть , Mari Элнет , Tatar Илләт / İllät) is a 204 km long left tributary of the Volga in the European part of Russia .

course

The river has its source in the east of the Republic of Mari El , around 10 km south of the urban-type settlement Mari-Turek . It initially flows in a south-westerly direction through a wooded flat valley. About 10 km southeast of the settlement Morki he reaches the northwest of the Republic of Tatarstan , where he receives the Irowka .

After 34 km on Tatar territory, the Ilet flows south of Morki back to Mari El. After the confluence of the Aschit , it changes its direction of flow to the west and meanders gently through the densely wooded southeast of Mari Els. East of Krasnogorski , the Juschut flows into the Ilet, which then turns in mainly southwestern and southern directions.

About 5 km northwest of Wolschsk the Ilet finally reaches the Volga, which forms the border between Mari El and the Chuvash Republic .

navigability

The Ilet is navigable on its lower course from mid-April to mid-November during the ice-free period. Since the river does not lie in any major city, shipping, in contrast to the tourist use by boat travelers, does not play a major role.
