Morki ( Russian Морки ; Mari Морко , Morko ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Mari El ( Russia ) with 9,914 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is in the Volga region , about 75 kilometers southeast of the republic capital Yoshkar-Ola not far from the border to the neighboring Republic of Tatarstan . The Morjanka brook flows through the village in the river system of the left Volga tributary Ilet .

Morki is the administrative center of the Morki Rajon of the same name . The municipality (Gorodskoje posselenije) Morki also includes the village of Kanal, four kilometers to the east, in addition to the settlement.

history

The village of Morki was founded in 1678.

In the Soviet period after the establishment of the Autonomous Oblast of Mari in 1920 (forerunner of the ASSR of Mari ) on August 28, 1924, it became the administrative seat of a canton as one of the most compact settlement areas of the Mari . The canton was later converted into a Rajon.

On February 24, 1969, Morki received urban-type settlement status.

Culture and sights

In Morki is the Epiphany Church ( церковь Богоявления , zerkow Bogojawlenija ). The place has a history and literature museum and a culture palace.

In several villages of the Rajon there are further museums for personalities of the cultural life of the Mari: for the writer Sergei Tschawain (1888–1937) in the village of Tschawainur, for the writer Nikolai Muchin (1890–1937) in Olykjal and for the poet Nikolai Kasakow ( 1918–1989) in Kutjuk-Kiner.

Economy and Infrastructure

Morki is the center of an agricultural and forestry area.

The settlement is connected by a local road to the Schelanger settlement 56 kilometers away, where there is a connection to the federal highway R 175 from Zelenodolsk to Yoshkar-Ola and the nearest railway station is also located.
