Nowy Torjal ( Russian Но́вый Торъя́л ; Mari У Торъял ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Mari El in Russia with 6635 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is about 70 km as the crow flies northeast of the republic capital Yoshkar-Ola . He is at the right Pizhma River creek Nemda , at the confluence of the left tributary Schukschan.

Nowy Torjal is the administrative center of Novotorjalsky Rajons and the seat of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Novy Torjal, which also includes the village of Petrichata.

history

The place was founded in 1815. In 1920 he became the administrative seat of the canton Torjalski of the newly founded Autonomous Oblast of the Mari, the later (from 1936) ASSR of the Mari . On June 20, 1932, the canton was converted into a Rajon, from 1935 under the current name Novotorjalski.

In 1972 the place received urban-type settlement status.

The 88K-014 regional road leads to Nowy Torjal and branches off the 88K-001 Yoshkar-Ola - Sernur  - Urschum (formerly R172) about 20 km south of the village of Nursola . The 88K-019 runs from Nowy Torjal in an easterly direction to Sernur, the 88K- 015 to the neighboring district of Orshanka to the west and the Nemda downhill to the north to the nearby border with Kirov Oblast (from there in the direction of Sovetsk ) the 88K-023.

The nearest train station is in the republic capital Yoshkar-Ola.
