(16589) Hastrup is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 24 September 1992 by the American astronomer Eleanor Helin at Palomar Observatory was discovered.

The celestial body is named after Rolf Hastrup (* 1930), an employee of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory , who was involved in the Surveyor and Viking programs in the past and is now planning future unmanned space missions.
