Division 1 1995/96

The Division 1 1996/97 was the 59th time the highest French football league. The season began on August 9, 1996 with the opening game between FC Nantes Atlantique and AS Monaco (1: 3) and ended on May 24, 1997.

As promoters, SM Caen , Olympique Marseille and AS Nancy from Ligue 2 were added. The season as champions ended the AS Monaco and became the successor to AJ Auxerre . Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain qualified for the UEFA Champions League . FC Nantes , Girondins Bordeaux , Auxerre, SC Bastia and Olympique Lyon as well as FC Metz and Racing Strasbourg qualified for the UEFA Cup via the Coupe de la Ligue . At the UEFA Intertoto Cup the following season took HSC Montpellier part. OGC Nice secured participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup of the following year through the Coupe de France . Caen, Nancy, OSC Lille and Nice had to relegate to Division 2 .
