(1696) Nurmela is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 18 March 1939 by the Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at Turku was discovered.
The asteroid was named after the Finnish academic Tauno Kalervo Nurmela , who was temporarily Chancellor of the University of Turku.
