(1987) Kaplan is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on September 11, 1952 by the Russian astronomer Pelageja Fyodorovna Shain at the Crimean Observatory in Simejis .
The name of the asteroid was chosen in honor of the Russian astronomer and war veteran Samuil Aronowitsch Kaplan .
