(20518) Rendtel is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 12, 1999 by André Knöfel at the Drebach public observatory .
The celestial body was named after the German physicist Jürgen Rendtel (* 1954). Rendtel works at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) and is an amateur astronomer . He initiated the Meteors Working Group in 1975 and was President of the International Meteor Organization from 1988 to 2013 .
