(2198) Ceplecha is a main middle belt asteroid discovered on November 7, 1975 at the Oak Ridge Observatory of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysicsin in Harvard, Massachusetts ( IAU code 801). The asteroid belongs to the Astraea family, a group of asteroids named after (5) Astraea .

designation

(2198) Ceplecha was named after the Czechoslovak astronomer Zdeněk Ceplecha , who became known for his work on meteors . His investigations of the meteorite Přibram led for the first time to the fact that an exact orbit could be given for such an object.
