(2778) Tangshan is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 14. December 1979 at the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing was discovered.

The name of the asteroid was given in memory of the city of Tangshan in the Chinese province of Hebei , which was struck by a massive earthquake (magnitude: 7.8) in 1976 .
