(39549) Casals is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on February 27, 1992 by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .

The asteroid was named on January 6, 2003 after the Catalan cellist , composer and conductor Pau Casals (1876–1973), who was nominated for the 1958 Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment to peace, democracy and freedom .
