(4494) Marimo is a main belt asteroid discovered on October 13, 1988 by Seiji Ueda and Hiroshi Kaneda from the observatory in Kushiro-shi .

The asteroid was named after the green algae Aegagropila linnaei , which is called "Marimo" in Japan.
