(5224) Abbe is a main belt asteroid that was discovered by Freimut Börngen in Tautenburg on February 21, 1982 .

It was named in 1992 on the occasion of the first meeting of the Astronomical Society in reunified Germany in honor of Ernst Abbe (1840–1905).
