(9138) Murdoch is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 29 September 1973 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory ( observatory code 675) in California was discovered.

The asteroid was named on April 2, 1999 after the Anglo-Irish writer and philosopher Iris Murdoch (1919–1999), who is known for her novels, in which she combines detailed descriptions of people with captivating storylines.
