1,2-Dimethylhydrazine is a liquid organic-chemical compound from the group of hydrazine derivatives . It is an isomer of 1,1-dimethylhydrazine .

properties

1,2-Dimethylhydrazine is a colorless liquid that boils at 87 ° C under normal pressure . The heat of vaporization at the boiling point is 35.16 kJ mol −1 . The vapor pressure function results according to Antoine according to log 10 (P) = A− (B / (T + C)) (P in bar, T in K) with A = 2.96404, B = 707.722 and C = −120.979 in the temperature range from 274.52 to 297.61 K. The compound is highly volatile and completely miscible with water .

1,2-Dimethylhydrazine is a highly flammable liquid whose vapors are heavier than air and form an explosive mixture with it. The compound has a flash point of <5 ° C. The explosion range is between 2.4 vol.% As the lower explosion limit (LEL) and 20 vol.% As the upper explosion limit (UEL).

use

1,2-Dimethylhydrazine is no longer manufactured in Germany. In animal experiments in the field of oncology , 1,2-dimethylhydrazine is used to induce colon cancer .

Environment and toxicity

The liquid is very hazardous to water , it is toxic to aquatic organisms. In animal experiments it is classified as carcinogenic and is a poison to eat , breath and contact . In the liver , 1,2-dimethylhydrazine is broken down into the highly carcinogenic azoxymethane . 1,2-Dimethylhydrazine is therefore the procarcinogen for azoxymethane.
