The 11th Army ( Japanese 第 11 軍 , Dai-jūichi-gun ) was from 1938 to 1945 a major unit of the Imperial Japanese Army . Your Tsūshōgō code (military code name) was backbone ( 呂 , Ro ) or Ro 5500 .
history
The 11th Army was set up in the Republic of China on July 4, 1938, one year after the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War , under the command of Lieutenant General Okamura Yasuji , and was subordinate to the Central China Expeditionary Army . It consisted of the 6th , 101st and 106th Infantry Divisions , the 5th Heavy Field Artillery Brigade and other smaller units.
As early as June 1938, the 11th Army was involved in combat operations with national Chinese in the Wuhan area and on June 12, 1938 was able to take the airfield of Anqing , Anhui . In the ensuing battle for Wuhan , she was instrumental in the conquest of the city.
From September 1939 she was placed under the newly formed China Expedition Army.
On April 17, 1944, the largest Japanese enterprise, Operation Ichi-gō , began, in which the 11th Army was involved in the 400,000-strong force. After Operation Ichi-gō she was assigned to the 6th Regional Army, which was supposed to secure the newly conquered areas between the Yangtze River and the Yellow River .
It was dissolved on August 14, 1945 near Guilin .
