The 10th Army ( Japanese 第 10 軍 , Dai-jū-gun ) was a major unit of the Imperial Japanese Army from 1937 to 1938 .

history

The 10th Army was set up on October 20, 1937 by the Daihon'ei under the command of Lieutenant General Yanagawa Heisuke as reinforcement for the Shanghai Expeditionary Army fighting in the Second Battle of Shanghai . It consisted of the 6th Division , the newly formed 18th and 114th Division , a detachment of the 5th Division under Noboru Kunisaki, which was deployed in northern China at the time, and the 6th Heavy Artillery Regiment.

On November 5, 1937, the 10th Army landed in Hangzhou Bay, southeast of Shanghai, and on November 7, it was combined with the Shanghai Expeditionary Army to form the Central China Regional Army .

After the end of the fighting for Shanghai at the end of November 1937, the army advanced towards Nanking , the capital of the Republic of China . From December 1, she took part in the Battle of Nanking . After taking the city, units of the 10th Army took part in the Nanking massacre .

The army, like the Shanghai Expeditionary Army, was disbanded in Nanking on February 14, 1938. The units subordinate to her were divided between the Northern China Regional Army under Terauchi Hisaichi and the Central China Expedition Army under Hata Shunroku, which was newly formed from the Central China Regional Army .
