Applications

The application process for the World Cup has not yet started. Some countries, including Egypt , Australia and China , have already expressed their interest in bidding.

ASEAN

The first expression of interest for the 2034 World Cup was made by the Southeast Asian football associations. The idea of a combined ASEAN offer had already been discussed in January 2011 when the former President of the Singapore Football Association, Zainudin Nordin, proposed this at ASEAN meetings. The President of Nordin and Special Olympics Malaysia, Datuk Mohamed Feisol Hassan, took up this again in 2013. According to FIFA rules from 2017 onwards, the 2030 World Cup cannot be played in Asia (AFC) as members of the Asian Football Confederation are excluded from the competition after Qatar has been selected for 2022 . Therefore, an AFC member's earliest bid could be for 2034.

Malaysia later withdrew from the engagement, but Singapore and other ASEAN countries continued their campaign to submit a joint bid for the World Cup in 2034. In February 2017, during a visit by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Yangon, ASEAN held talks about submitting a joint offer. Myanmar. On July 1, 2017, the vice-chairman of the Indonesian Football Association, Joko Driyono, announced that Indonesia and Thailand will lead a consortium of Southeast Asian nations. Driyono added that due to geographic and infrastructural considerations and the expanded format (48 teams) at least two or three ASEAN countries together would be able to host games.

In September 2017, the deputy chairman of the Thai League 1, Benjamin Tan, confirmed at the meeting of the ASEAN Football Association (AFF) that his association was interested in competing with Indonesia to host the 2034 World Cup. On the same occasion, AFF General Secretary Dato Sri Azzuddin Ahmad confirmed that Indonesia and Thailand would make a joint offer. Indonesia is the only Southeast Asian country that has so far participated in a world championship when the area was still known to the Dutch East Indies.

In June 2018, however, the FIFA Executive Committee member Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Sultan of Pahang , Tengku Abdullah, who is also the former President of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), expressed an interest in hosting the World Cup together with the two countries and Vietnam. The four countries already hosted a football event together during the 2007 Asian football championship .

In June 2019, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha announced that all ten ASEAN countries would submit a joint bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

Egypt

Egyptian Sports and Youth Minister Ashraf Sobhy said Egypt is considering an offer to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
