action

After a devastating nuclear war with radioactive fallout , various wars and epidemics, the extinction of mankind seems inevitable. In addition, not a single child has been born for over 15 years. The remains of human civilization live in caves or underground shelters scattered across the country . The world is marked by violence and chaos; In the era of the so-called "New Depression", resignation and disillusionment determine everyday life.

The heavily pregnant and widowed Sarah Stockwell lives with her mother Margaret, who has been mourning the loss of her missing husband and son David for years, in the house of Dr. Samuel Singleton. At some point the mystical landlord joins the two women and asks them to seek a safe haven. He also prophesies that the world will change with the birth of the child. The trio eventually make their way into a huge cave called Spring-Fed Lake .

That place is home to a large number of other survivors and refugees, including radio host Michael. He feverishly chases another, distant radio signal in order to contact the speaker, Harvey.

Meanwhile, the unborn child arouses desires in the unscrupulous Abigail Mynard, the leader of an elite, paramilitary association. She orders her foster son David - he is actually Margaret's missing descendant and thus the unborn child's uncle - to bring her the child. The loyal David then attacks the cave system with followers, but then abandons his plan after he realizes that the pregnant woman is his sister.

Sarah no longer feels safe after the attacks in the cave and decides to drive towards the radio signal with her mother and Michael. On the way, the trio Abigail forks with their moronic supporters. Together they finally reach a large residential building in which the lonely Harvey lives. Here events soon come thick and fast. After Sarah gives birth, Abigail tries to kidnap the little girl, but suddenly appearing David thwarts the plan and kills his foster mother. In the assassination he died of serious injuries. At the end of the film, Michael announces the happy event in a radio message.
