3-Amino-9-ethylcarbazole is used in biochemistry as a chromogenic substrate for immunostaining with a horseradish peroxidase and, after oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, produces a red dye which is insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol , e.g. B. in an immunoperoxidase assay , western blot and immunohistochemistry .
