D -3-phosphoglyceric acid (also D -3-phosphoglycerate ) is an intermediate of gluconeogenesis and glycolysis as well as the end point of one of their byways, the Rapoport-Luebering cycle . It is produced by the reversible reaction of D - 1,3-bisphosphoglyceric acid and adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and D -3-phosphoglyceric acid. This reaction is catalyzed by phosphoglycerate kinase . The phosphoglycerate mutase converts it to D - 2-phosphoglyceric acid .

D -3-phosphoglyceric acid is also an intermediate product of the Calvin cycle : The fixation of carbon dioxide is done by carboxylation of D -Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate to an unstable intermediate which rapidly to two molecules of D -3-phosphoglyceric acid hydrolyzed is. This reaction is catalyzed by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase ( Rubisco for short ). D -3-phosphoglyceric acid reacts further with consumption of one molecule of ATP per molecule of D -3-phosphoglyceric acid to form D -1,3-biphosphoglyceric acid . This reacts further to D - glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate , from which energy-rich compounds such as z. B. D - glucose can be formed.

In addition, D -3-phosphoglyceric acid is an important precursor to the biosynthesis of the amino acids L - serine , L - cysteine and glycine .

The enantiomer L -3-phosphoglyceric acid has no biological significance.
