425 Park Avenue is a Norman Foster- designed skyscraper in New York City that emerged as a winner in a design competition and was first presented to the public in October 2012.

description

After it became known that the old high-rise office building at 425 Park Avenue no longer meets today's requirements for a modern office building , a design competition was initiated to find a new skyscraper to replace the original building. The following candidates were available:

  1. Zaha Hadid : A rather unconventional tower with an organic-looking shape. 204 meters high and 40 floors. Got a lot of positive feedback, but according to the jury the unusual, dynamic shape was not too suitable for the famous, more conservative, Park Avenue and was therefore rejected.
  2. OMA : Building consists of three (twisted) staggered cubes, where the lowest one hugs the street and the uppermost one is rotated 45 ° to the so-called Manhattan Grid (street grid). It should give the impression of a 3D tower. It would have a height of 198 meters and 38 storeys. Project was also discarded.
  3. Rogers Stirk Harbor Partners: According to the architect Richard Rogers, a skyscraper that combines honest expression, generosity, efficiency and humanity . Desired height of 203 meters with 44 floors. Was not accepted by the jury.
  4. Foster and Partners : These are the competition winners chosen by the jury. The decisive factor was the very elegant and contemporary design that blends in well with Park Avenue. The shape of the tower was specially designed for a maximum flood of light so that future office employees feel more comfortable. Almost every floor should have a small terrace with a garden. The last two floors are to have a glazed sky garden . Almost all the reviews were very positive, which is why many are already celebrating the new tower as a new landmark of postmodernism . Some even see it as the new Seagram Building .

The foundation stone of 425 Park Avenue was laid in late June 2015, which marked the beginning of official construction of the building. The height to the roof aimed at by the architects is 242 meters, whereby so-called " fins " should bring the total height to over 272 meters. This level was reached on December 4, 2018. There should be at least 47 floors in total. With the current state of affairs, completion before 2019 is not expected.
