6P / d'Arrest is a short- period comet that was discovered by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest on June 28, 1851.

The comet's core is estimated to be 3.2 kilometers in size.

6P / d'Arrest was last in perihelion on March 2, 2015 .

In 1991 Andrea Carusi and Giovanni B. Valsecchi from the Istituto Astrofisica Spaziale in Rome and Ľubor Kresák and Margita Kresáková from the Slovak Astronomical Institute in Bratislava independently suggested that the comet was that of 1678 observed by Philippe de La Hire .

The comet was most brightly visible from Earth on August 13, 1976. It approached Earth to just 0.15  astronomical units (AU) and had a magnitude of 4.8 mag. This was due to the fact that the orbit was changed more strongly by Jupiter in 1968, so that the perihelion sank to 1.17 AU.
