8′-apo-β-caroten-8′-al is a carotenoid . It comes of course z. B. found in oranges, vegetables and liver, but is now mainly produced synthetically. It is used in the food industry as a yellow to red dye . In the EU it is approved as a food additive with the number E 160e. Because of the poor absorption in the gastrointestinal tract and the toxicological data, there are no toxicological concerns.
