The 86th Infantry Brigade ( German  86th US Infantry Brigade , nicknamed The Vermont Brigade ) is a light infantry brigade of the United States National Guard . The brigade consists of reservists from the National Guard from the US states of Vermont , Connecticut , Maine , New Hampshire , Massachusetts and Colorado . It is the only major unit of the United States' land forces specializing in mountain warfare . Since 2016 she has been subordinate to the active 10th Mountain Division .

The 86th Infantry Brigade was formed in 1925 with the 85th Infantry Brigade as one of two brigades of the 43rd Infantry Division of the National Guard. You were subordinate to the 172nd Infantry Regiment from Vermont and the 103rd Infantry Regiment from Maine . With the direct subordination of the infantry regiments to the division, the brigade was converted into a reconnaissance unit of the 43rd Reconnaissance Troop of the 43rd Infantry Division. Activated with the division in 1941, it took part in the Second World War in the Pacific War in New Guinea , the Solomon Islands and Luzon . With the reintroduction of the brigades into divisions after the Korean War , the brigade was again placed under the same division as an infantry brigade. It remained with the 43rd Infantry Division until it was dissolved in 1967. After that, it was subordinated to the 50th Panzer Division as a mechanized infantry brigade , and in 1988 to the 26th Infantry Division and in 1993 to the 42nd Infantry Division. Parts of the brigade served as Task Force Green Mountain in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 .

In 2006 the brigade was converted from a Heavy Brigade Combat Team to an Infantry Brigade Combat Team with a focus on mountain warfare. In 2010 the brigade was activated and deployed in Afghanistan. As part of a pilot project between active units of the US Army and the National Guard, the brigade was subordinated to the active 10th US Mountain Division in 2016.
