The 8 × 22 mm Nambu cartridge was designed by Colonel Kijirō Nambu for the pistol of the same name and introduced into the Imperial Japanese Army in 1914 . The design of the weapon was modified over time, but the cartridge remained unchanged.

Gun and ammunition were only made in Japan. Production ceased when Japan was defeated in World War II .
