The Type 30 bayonet ( Japanese 三 十年 式 銃 剣 Sanjunen-shiki jūken) was the standard bayonet of the Imperial Japanese Army . It could be attached to the Arisaka Type 30 rifle . It was later used with the Arisaka Type 38 and Arisaka Type 99 as well. Over 8.4 million copies were produced between 1897 and 1945 and were in service from the Russo-Japanese War until the end of World War II . The designation Type 30 indicates the year the troops were introduced, the 30th year of the rule of Emperor Meiji or 1897 according to the Gregorian calendar.
description
The bayonet is a sword bayonet that is sharpened on one side and weighs 700 grams. The blade is 400 millimeters long. The total length including the handle is 514 millimeters. When attached to the Arisaka Type 30, it towered over the average Japanese soldier. The reason for the long length of the bayonet was to give the Japanese infantrymen the opportunity to defend themselves against attacking cavalry. Despite its widespread use, the Type 30 also suffered from weaknesses, such as poor workmanship, quick rusting and easy bending.
The bayonets were manufactured by Matsushita Kinzoku KK (Matsushita Metalworking Corp), Kokura Army Arsenal, Matshusita National Denki and others, among others. The bayonets varied slightly in their processing.
