Lists on the subject |
The heavy machine gun type 3 ( Japanese 三年 式 重 機関 銃 Sannen-shiki jūkikanjū ), also called Taishō-3 machine gun , is a heavy Japanese machine gun in caliber 6.5 × 50 mm HR . It was used by the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1914 and was based on the design of the Hotchkiss M1914 . An estimated 3000 Type 3 pieces were made. The designation type 3 indicates the year the troops were introduced, the third year of the rule of Emperor Taishō (1914 according to the Gregorian calendar).
description
The type 3 is an air-cooled, closing gas pressure charger . The rate of fire is relatively low at 400 to 450 rounds per minute. It is very similar to the Type 92 heavy machine gun , except that it uses the 6.5 mm cartridge instead of the 7.7 mm cartridge .
The Type 3 has two different visors: a permanently attached, retractable reflex visor is used for aiming if the machine gun is to be used for anti-aircraft defense; the other sight is a slightly curved sight, also permanently attached, on the right side of the barrel. The latter sight has settings from 300 meters up to 2200 meters. The effective range is 1700 meters. The elevation range of the weapon is between −15 ° and + 90 °, the lateral range is 33.5 °. The weapon has no safety lever and is immediately ready to fire after feeding in the 30-round strip made of metal.
The Type 3, including the tripod, was carried by four soldiers on special handles and was therefore immediately ready for use after the weapon was set down. It was a reliable weapon that worked well even in the low temperatures in the northern Manchurian theater of war.
