history

Japanese soldiers with Type 30 rifles near Tschemulpo, August / September 1904

The Murata Type 22 rifle used in the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894/95 had been in use since 1889 and is now obsolete. That is why in 1894 the military command of the Japanese Empire commissioned the renowned Colonel Arisaka Nariakira as head of a commission to develop a rifle with a smaller caliber than that of the Murata Type 22 . The development of the new rifle took place in December 1895 in the Koishikawa arsenal under the direction of Colonel Arisakas. The Type 30 was introduced into the army as early as 1897, and with it the new caliber 6.5 × 50 mm HR , which replaced the 8 mm caliber of the Type 22. In the Russo-Japanese War , all infantrymen were equipped with the Type 30. During the war, the rifle showed some weaknesses and the Arisaka Type 38 was introduced as early as 1905 .

technology
