Lists on the subject |
The heavy machine gun Type 1 ( Jap. 一式重機関銃 Isshiki jūkikanjū ) is an air-cooled, fully automatic heavy gas operated - machine gun that from 1941 the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy was in use.
Naming
As is usual with most Japanese weapons, the designation Type 1 refers to the year of introduction within the Japanese calendar scheme in 2601 - in the Gregorian calendar the year 1941.
design
The Type 1 is the successor to the Type 92 heavy machine gun , but is much lighter than this. The weight reduction is almost 50% and has been reduced from 55 kg to 31.8 kg.
A major change compared to its predecessor is the interchangeable run that an experienced team could carry out within a minute. While the Type 92 could use rimless and rimless ammunition, the Type 1 only used rimless ammunition of caliber 7.7 × 58 mm . The ammunition was introduced via a 30-round metal strip from the left side. The trigger could be operated with the thumb. A safety lever was located to the left of the breech. The cadence of the weapon was relatively low with 400 to 450 rounds per minute. Although similar, improvements were made to the tripod compared to the Type 92. It should allow for more targeted fire.
In contrast to the previous models, the sight is located directly above the barrel. Attaching a telescopic sight was possible. The range of type 1 is up to 4000 meters. The effective maximum range is given as 1400 meters. Because of its long range, it was often used for anti-aircraft defense on a tripod (see photo above right).
Like all Japanese heavy machine guns, the Type 1 had spars on a tripod that could be inserted into the wooden bars. The machine gun could be carried by three or four soldiers and was ready to fire immediately after being set down.
Although it was a big improvement on the Type 92, it is not known how many Type 1s were produced or whether it was mass-produced. In the last years of the war, Japan had considerable problems with raw material supplies, so it can be assumed that the urgently needed metals were more likely to be used in the production of artillery , vehicles, anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons .
