Lists on the subject |
The Type 100 submachine gun ( Japanese 一 〇〇 式 機関 短 銃 , Hyaku-shiki kikan-tanjū ) is a submachine gun that was developed in the Japanese Empire during the early Shōwa period . It was used primarily in the Pacific War .
history
The submachine gun was designed by Kijiro Nambu and the first prototypes were shown to the Imperial Japanese Army in 1939, after which it was officially introduced in 1940. The “100” in the type designation refers to the fact that the year 1940 corresponds to the year 2600 in the Japanese calendar, whereby the last two digits “00” are used as “100” in the weapon name. Initially, the weapon was produced in a version with a wooden shaft and a paratrooper version, until a shortage of materials in the Japanese industry in 1944 made it necessary to produce a simplified version, the rate of which was increased by 350 rounds per minute to 800 rounds per minute.
In the Pacific War, Japanese paratroopers such. B. the Giretsu Kūteitai the weapons to attack oil fields owned by the Netherlands and bombers stationed on the Mariana Islands . The weapon proved to be extremely effective.
In total, tens of thousands of these weapons were produced in the Japanese Empire. After the war, the weapon was not widely used by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces , but it was used to a small extent in nearby conflicts in Korea and Vietnam .
function
The gun is a fully automatic machine, whose curved box magazine is inserted laterally from the left, while the pods are ejected to the right. The weapon fires the caliber 8 × 22 mm Nambu .
