Field post parcel from the First World War from Worms to Virton . Contents: a Christmas tree top .

In December 1917, the Austrian Reichspost-Zeitung recommended that “the delivery of the Christmas parcels shouldn't be done in the last days before Christmas, but the sooner the better”.

There was already an increase in parcel traffic in the first half of December, as the shops were still stocking Christmas goods and many mail-order shops that had sent their price lists in November took care of the orders that were then received. Shortly before the festival, the actual Christmas packages, the gift packages, were delivered. Parcel traffic from December 19 to 25 was sometimes more than double that of normal traffic; but this Christmas increase was still very different in the individual areas of Germany in the 1920s. The Deutsche Reichspost regularly had to take special measures to cope with the extraordinary mass of parcels. In the larger post houses, special cellars were usually kept free as Christmas packing rooms. Means of transport and personnel had to be strengthened.

During the Second World War , the number of field post parcels from November to January also increased significantly compared to the remaining months. This is probably due to the fact that winter clothing was sent to the front from home.

1950s

The parcel distribution center of the Berlin post office O 17 is busy ( Deutsche Post der GDR ,
November 20, 1953)

After the currency reform in June 1948 in West Germany , parcel traffic increased more rapidly in October each year because the retail trade was stocking up on goods for Christmas. This increase continued into November. In December the actual Christmas traffic began, in which the large mail order companies , who had sent out their price lists and product catalogs in November and were now handling the orders, were to a large extent involved. But the number of private gift packages is now also increasing day by day in November. Although many consignor with a longer journey times than expected in times of ordinary traffic and give up their packages so earlier and although particular from the Federal territory for the Soviet occupation zone , achieved certain number of gift packages that because of the limited postal links long duration have, are usually brought in at an early stage of Christmas parcel traffic only peaked in the days from December 18 to 24 . During this period, up to 1952, increases compared to normal traffic of 50 to 150% were ascertained.

Every year , the Deutsche Bundespost made special preparations to cope with the extraordinary mass of parcels . Already in autumn, rail mail cars (Bpw) and sack truck runs for the Christmas traffic were arranged with the Bundesbahn and measures for the transport and handling of the parcels were prepared in cooperation between the upper post office management , the upper post office and the offices mainly involved in traffic. Most post offices had to work overtime or increase staff; If necessary, parcels were received and delivered on Sundays; Renting rooms and vehicles was often necessary.

It was also a regular topic in the federal postal calendar at the end of November.

2000s

With the advent of the Internet and the possibility of ordering via it, Black Friday, known in the retail sector as Cyber Monday , “spilled” into the Internet from the United States .

Most postal companies indicate the relevant deadlines as early as the beginning of December and after the festive season announce in press releases that mostly twice the usual amount of mail was sent over the Christmas period. According to the Federal Association of Parcel and Express Logistics (BIEK), up to 20% of all consignments in end customer business occur in the last weeks of the year.

From 2000 to 2011, Swiss Post carried around 15 million parcels and around 20 million letters every day from the beginning of December to Christmas Eve . While on normal working days an average of half a million parcels pass through the sorting systems of the three parcel centers / sorting centers in Daillens , Frauenfeld and Härkingen , on the peak days from December 13 to 21, 2005 there were over a million parcels each. Parcel traffic has increased since then. In 2012 there were 16 million parcels and 20 million letters a day. In 2013 already 17 million parcels and 30 million letters. From December 1 to Christmas Day 2014, Swiss Post processed around 18 million parcels.

After strong growth in 2015, the leading delivery companies in Germany expect a rush in the parcel business in 2016 as well. According to their own statements, more than 20,000 temporary workers are hired by the four largest parcel service providers to guarantee smooth delivery. Around half of this is accounted for by Deutsche Post. DPD wants to provide around 4,000 temporary jobs, the other two parcel companies are: Hermes and GLS . The driving force behind the development is and will remain the booming online trade, which, according to estimates by the German trade association, will increase by around 11 percent to around 44 billion euros this year.
