8 Foot Sativa (also 8 Foot ) is a metal band from Auckland , New Zealand .

Band history

Brent Fox and Gary Smith, both metal fans, knew each other from Massey High School in Auckland when they decided to start a band. Together with Peter “Speed” Young on drums, Russell as singer and “Fat” Dave on bass, they played covers for Pantera , Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Sepultura , Metallica and Slayer in their early days . Since Dave often did not show up for rehearsals, Brent Fox switched from guitar to bass. Russell was more important to his pop band, which is why he left. A short time later they met Ari at a music school, who played drums there. He became their first singer, with whom they also rehearsed their own songs. Ari wrote the lyrics for Fuel Set , Kick it all Away and Engine , which would later appear on her debut album Hate Made Me . Then he disappeared and was not heard from for a few years. In a shopping mall, the band met Justin "Jackhammer" Niessen, who became their new singer.

In this formation they recorded their first album Hate Made Me , which was released on March 3, 2002 in New Zealand. It debuted at number 43 on the New Zealand album charts and has now reached gold status. The single 8 Foot Sativa that was extracted from it was number 1 in the top 12 list of TV music channels M2 for eight weeks and stayed in these charts for a total of seven months, five of which in the top 3. Shortly afterwards, Peter Young left due to musical differences Band and was replaced by Sam Sheppard.

On July 14, 2003 the second album Season for Assault was released , which entered the album charts at number 6 and number 1 on the indie chart. The following year it was released by Roadrunner Records in Australia and a little later distributed worldwide by Black Mark Production . The debut album was also released worldwide by Black Mark Production.

Two weeks before the band flew to Sweden to record their third album, Niessen got out. Just two days later, however, a new singer was found in Matt Sheppard, the brother of the drummer Sam Sheppard. They recorded the third album Breed the Pain with their new singer in the underground studio in Sweden . His girlfriend did the artwork for it. It was released in early 2005. After the Breed the Pain tour, the Sheppard brothers left 8 Foot to reactivate their own band Sinate . Niessen therefore took over the microphone again for four New Zealand concerts in September 2005. The band was complemented by Corey Friedlander on drums and William Cleverdon on guitar.

In 2006 the band carousel continued to turn, or as they called it "... the line-up changes from hell." (German ... line-up change from hell ). Ben Read from the New Zealand death metal band Ulcerate became the new singer with whom they flew back to Sweden in the underground studio. Friedlander injured himself there and was unable to record the drums. Steven Westerberg from Carnal Forge stepped in for him . William Cleverdon left the band shortly after the recordings, but returned as the second guitarist in mid-2006. Friedlander left for personal reasons and to devote more time to his other band, Final Eve . Jamie Saint Merat, who also played in Read's other band Ulcerate, came to 8 Foot to replace him. In October 2006, Brent Fox also got out because he was no longer enjoying it. He was replaced by Rommilly Smith. But that wasn't the end of the line-up change either. In January 2007, William Cleverdon went to the doctor with pain in his left wrist and it was found that one bone in his forearm was much shorter than the other. This required several operations and lengthy rehab, which is why he could no longer work for the band. Christian Humpreys from Smith's other band NewWayHome replaced him.

All of this and other problems delayed the release of the next album Poison of Ages . It finally appeared on May 21, 2007.
