The 93rd Infantry Division (93rd ID) was a major unit of the army of the German Wehrmacht in World War II .
Division history
The 93rd Infantry Division was set up on September 17, 1939 at the Jüterbog military training area in Defense District III as a division of the 5th wave and provided with Czech equipment. At first, the division consisted of only two regiments, one of which (Infantry Regiment 271) had emerged from the SA standard Feldherrnhalle. The 270 Infantry Regiment was added later.
First subordinated to the 1st Army in the Saar-Palatinate, the division was on leave from mid-1940 to February 1941. In the spring of 1941 deployed again in France, after the attack on the Soviet Union began , the 93rd Infantry Division fought its way to Northern Russia via Latvia and Estonia and was involved in the Leningrad blockade at the Oranienbaumer Kessel until April 1942 . It was then relocated to the Volkhov Front.
In 1943, the Grenadier Regiment 271 “Feldherrnhalle” was used to form the Feldherrnhalle Panzer Grenadier Division ; the 93rd Infantry Division remained two-pronged until its regrouping in September 1943. In September 1943, the first large-scale troop trials of the MP 43, the later assault rifle 44, took place in the unit.
After retreats through Livonia , Courland and Samland , the remnants of the division were taken prisoner by the Soviets in April 1945 in the Danzig Bay on the Hela peninsula .
