AXL is a science fiction film directed by Oliver Daly that was released in US theaters on August 24, 2018.

action

In the California desert, 18-year-old Miles finds AXL, the escaped prototype of a robot dog that was equipped with advanced artificial intelligence as part of a top-secret military project. When Miles activates the robot dog's owner-pairing technology, it connects to him. An unusual friendship develops. But the creators of AXL want it back at all costs. To protect his new best friend from capture, Miles works with his shrewd ally Sara.

production

Directed by Oliver Daly , who also wrote the script. Daly had already released a short film in 2015 called Miles , which basically tells the same basic story. Daly captures the atmosphere of the Amblin films of the 1980s with the film, according to Ben Pearson. The score was composed by Ian Hultquist . The soundtrack for the film, which comprises a total of 31 pieces of music, was released for download on August 24, 2018 by Lakeshore Records.

Alex Neustaedter got the role of Miles, the stuntman Dorian Kingi gives AXL his voice and his body. Becky G took on the role of Sara. In October 2016, the cast of Alex MacNicoll , who can be seen in the film in the role of Sam, became known.

Filming began in late summer 2016. The film was shot in New York, in autumn and winter 2016 in Santa Clarita, California, and in Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, as well as in Buenos Aires, Melbourne and London. Further recordings were made in Mexico. Tim Orr acted as cameraman .

In Germany the film received a direct-to-DVD release. EuroVideo released the DVD and Blu-ray on July 18, 2019.

reception

In May 2018, Global Road Entertainment released a first trailer. The film was released nationwide on August 24, 2018. The film grossed around 6.5 million US dollars in cinemas worldwide.

"An action-heavy youth science fiction film that laboriously and unexcitingly stretches a short film made in 2015 to the length of a feature film and also fails because the human-mechanical dog relationship is never really emotionally credible."
