A. Elizabeth Jones (* 1948 in Munich ) is a former US diplomat who was Ambassador to Kazakhstan from 1995 to 1998 and Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs between 2001 and 2005 .

Life

A. Elizabeth Jones, whose parents were also diplomats, grew up in Munich and West Berlin , where she also attended school. A subsequent undergraduate course in history at Swarthmore College , she graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA History).

She then joined the Foreign Service (Foreign Service) and was initially 1971-1972 Vice-Consul at the embassy in Afghanistan and then from 1972 to 1973 Public Relations Officer in the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry in Washington, DC After was political advisor at the embassy in Egypt between 1973 and 1975 , followed from 1977 to 1979 as a political advisor at the embassy in Jordan . She was then Deputy Head of US Interest Group in Iraq from 1979 to 1980 and Lebanon Secretary at the State Department from 1981 to 1983 .

From 1983 to 1984, A. Elizabeth Jones was deputy head of the department for Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Iraq and then from 1985 to 1988 deputy head of the economic and trade department at the Consulate General in West Berlin. During this time she completed a postgraduate degree in international relations at Boston University , which she completed in 1986 with a Master of Arts (MA International Relations).

She was deputy head of the legation in Islamabad between 1988 and 1992 and deputy head of the legation in Bonn from 1992 to 1993 . After A. Elizabeth Jones was Secretary of State Warren Christopher's administrative assistant between 1993 and 1994 , she succeeded William Harrison Courtney as Ambassador to Kazakhstan on October 18, 1995 . She held this post until October 12, 1998, after which on January 23, 1999 Richard H. Jones became the new ambassador to Kazakhstan. She then served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs between 1998 and 2000 . Her nomination for the post of ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, pronounced on January 22, 2000, was not confirmed by the Senate , so that John Kornblum remained ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany .

Most recently, from 2001 to 2005, A. Elizabeth Jones was Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Head of the Department for Europe and Eurasia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On October 12, 2004, she was awarded the title Career Ambassador , the highest rank in the foreign service. After she subsequently retired from the diplomatic service, she became Executive Vice President of communications consultancy APCO Worldwide in 2005 .

Her marriage to Thomas A. Homan gave birth to a son and a daughter.
