A. Vincent ( Aloysius Vincent ; born June 14, 1928 in Calicut , Madras Presidency , † February 25, 2015 in Chennai , Tamil Nadu ) was an Indian cameraman and director of Malayalam , Tamil , Telugu and Hindi films .

Life

A. Vincent comes from a family of Syrian Christians . In 1947 he began his training at the camera in Malayalam film in the Gemini Studios and assisted the cameramen Kamal Ghosh and N. Natarajan . His first work as the main cameraman is the hit film Neelakuyil (1954) directed by P. Bhaskaran and Ramu Kariat . Under Kariat's direction, he also skilfully staged the actor Sathyan in Mudiyanaya Puthran (1961). The opening sequence of the film, in which Sathyan lights a cigarette in the dark and then harasses a Harijan girl, is praised for her remarkable camera work.

Vincent also worked for Tamil film. In Madras he filmed for Venus Pictures for director T. Prakash Rao Amara Deepam (1956) and for CV Sridhar's directorial debut Kalyana Parisu (1959). Other films with Sridhar followed, including Nenjil Ore Alayam (1962) and Kadalikka Neramillai (1964). He was behind the camera until the late 1990s.

Vincent made his film director debut in 1964 with Bhargavi Nilayam . The film was the first ghost film of the Malayalam cinema with the stars Madhu , Prem Nazir , PJ Anthony , Vijayanirmala and Adoor Bhasi . His second film, the melodrama Murappennu (1965) with the same male stars and the actress Sharada , was also a success. The well-known author MT Vasudevan Nair wrote the script for this as well as for Vincent's films Nagarame Nandi (1967) and Asuravithu (1968). Also Thoppil Bhasi provided the template for multiple Vincent Movies: Ashwamedham (1967), Thulabharam (1968), Nadhi (1969) and Abhijathyam (1971). Alongside KS Sethumadhavan , A. Vincent became the most important reform director of Malayalam films. He wasn't usually behind the camera in his own films.

Vincent received a Filmfare Award / Best Cinematography for his cinematography on the Hindi film Prem Nagar (1974) . As a director, he received a National Film Award for the second best film for his film drama Thulabharam (1968) . The Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC) honored him in 2003 together with KK Mahajan and VK Murthy with honorary membership.

His sons Jayanan Vincent and Ajayan Vincent also work as a film cameraman.
