history

Today's Società Sportiva Monopoli 1966 was founded in 1966 in the city of Monopoli , which now has almost 50,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Bari in Apulia . At the time the association was founded, the club was called Associazione Calcio Monopoli and began at the regional level in the Seconda Categoria Puglia. Already after the end of the 1969/70 season, the promotion to the fourth-class Serie D could be made for the first time , which had been preceded by two promotions in series. In Serie D, AC Monopoli established itself and played the following eight years in this league, with the best placement being a third place for Girone H in the 1974/75 season. In 1978 AC Monopoli qualified for the newly created C2 series as the fourth highest division in Italian football. Here they played mainly in the 1980/81 season for promotion to the C1 series , but narrowly missed it as third. Three years later it worked with promotion to the third division, for the first time in the club's young history. As second in the Girone C they were only behind AS Jesi at the end of the season .

AC Monopoli also managed to establish itself in the C1 series. Long years of third division football followed in Monopoli, in which, in addition to a large number of midfield placements, two fifth places in the seasons 1984/85 and 1986/87 stood out. From 1989 to 1991 AC Monopoli was in Serie C1 from Giuseppe Papadopulo , who later worked in Serie A for AC Siena , Lazio Rome and US Lecce, among others . One year after Papadopulo's departure from Monopoli, however, the club was relegated to the C2 series, which was the first ever relegation in the club's 26-year history. In the following two years, positions twelve and six were achieved in the Girone C of the C2 series.

In the summer of 1994, AC Monopoli had to file for bankruptcy, was dissolved and a little later re-established as Atletico Monopoli . The new start began in the Prima Categoria Puglia, from which one rose to the Promozione Puglia in the first year. However, after three years in this league in 1999, you had to return to the provincial prima categoria. As a result, Atletico Monopoli’s financial problems worsened again, so that the club stopped playing between 1999 and 2003. In 2003 it continued under the old name AC Monopoli in the Eccellenza Puglia, from where one could return to Serie D after the end of the 2004/05 season. In the meanwhile fifth-rate Serie D, Monopoli established itself in the top group in the first year and managed the direct march through to Serie C2 as second of the Girone H, only behind Paganese Calcio . With the placements five, six, eight and ten in the four years after the promotion, you were able to re-establish yourself there sovereignly, until the financial situation, however, pushed the club back into provincial football one more time. In 2010 the club was re-established as Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Liberty Monopoli and played again in Eccellenza Puglia after being relegated from Serie C2. For the 2012/13 season they returned to Serie D, a year later the club changed its name again and from then on called itself Società Sportiva Monospolis , which was modified a year later with the addition of the founding year to Società Sportiva Monopoli 1966 . After establishing themselves in Serie D and ending the 2014/15 season with eleventh place in midfield, the club won the Coppa Italia Serie D in the same year with a final victory over Correggese. Due to license withdrawals from previous third division clubs, the SS Monopoli was awarded a place in the Lega Pro 2015/16 in 1966 because of this cup victory , which meant the return to third division after 23 years.
