The Cologne Falcons are an American football team from Cologne . From 1994 to the end of 2011 the team was part of the ASC Cologne Falcons e. V. is at home. With effect from January 1, 2012, the entire American football department moved to AFC Köln e. V. From then on, the team called itself AFC Köln Falcons and under this name achieved promotion to the 1st Bundesliga . Due to trademark disputes with the former chairman of the AFC Köln e. V. the logo and the name of the Falcons were changed at the beginning of the GFL season 2013 . Since then, the team has been running under the original name "Cologne Falcons". Due to the loss of the main sponsor, the Falcons had to leave the GFL and are now playing in the regional league.
history
In 1994 the Cologne Falcons were founded by former members of the Red Barons Cologne . Initially playing in the association league, the steep rise from the upper league to the highest German league, the German Football League , began in 2002 . There the Falcons experienced a tailor-made start in the 2005 season , with three wins in a row. In the end, however, they narrowly missed the play-offs and had to be satisfied with fifth place. In the 2006 season , the Falcons reached fourth place in the table and moved into the play-offs for the first time, but failed there in the quarter-finals with 0:62 at the southern champions Marburg Mercenaries . The 2007 season ended with another fifth place in the north table. In the 2008 season , the Falcons were last in the group north and had to go to the relegation , in which they met the Assindia Cardinals from Essen . Although rated as favorites, the Falcons lost both games (17:24 and 23:28) and were relegated to GFL 2 North.
In 2009 the A1 youth of the Cologne Falcons became German runner-up under head coach David Odenthal. In the same year, the men's team was runner-up in the GFL-2 group north. In 2010, however, the men's team was unable to build on this performance and ended the season in sixth place in the group north. It was not until 2012 that the Falcons made it back to the GFL in the relegation against the Lübeck Cougars . After a weak season with only two wins, the team had to go into relegation against the Bielefeld Bulldogs in autumn 2013 . There the team narrowly secured relegation in two games.
In 2014 we were able to build on our old successes again. Head coach Martin Hanselmann, who was signed for the Cologne Falcons in the middle of the 2013 season, was back on board. The Cologne Falcons achieved third place in the GFL Nord and thus the play-offs with victories over the Düsseldorf Panthers, which were still superior in the previous year, and the favored Baltic Hurricanes from Kiel. In the semi-finals, the Cologne team had to admit defeat to the New York Lions from Braunschweig, who later became German champions. In keeping with the most successful season in the history of the Cologne Falcons, the 25th anniversary was also celebrated this year. The Cologne Falcons are thus in sixth place in the European ranking.
According to media reports, the Falcons withdrew their team from the GFL's game operations in March 2015 due to internal problems of the main sponsor and a resulting financial shortfall in the budget. Newly arrived in the regional league, AFC Cologne dropped out and they were taken over by ASCC Cologne eV. This is where they are now based and aim to be promoted to GFL 2 in 2020.
The team is currently playing in the Regionalliga NRW.
