The Dortmund District Court is a court of ordinary jurisdiction and the largest of the six district courts in the district of the Dortmund District Court . Because of its size, the Dortmund District Court is not run by a director, but by a president. The president of the local court is therefore under the direct supervision of the president of the Hamm Higher Regional Court .

Jörg Heinrichs was appointed President of the Dortmund District Court in September 2015. Heinrichs had previously headed two larger North Rhine-Westphalian district courts: from 2008 to 2012 he was director of the Bielefeld district court and then President of the Essen district court . He is the successor to Peter Benesch, who headed the Dortmund court since 2010 and retired at the end of August 2015.
