A Place to Bury Strangers (also known as APTBS for short ) is an American band from New York City that play a mixture of noise rock and shoegaze . The group is notorious for their very loud and atmospheric concerts.

history

Before the band was founded, singer and guitarist Oliver Ackermann formed the group Skywave together with Paul Baker and John Fedowitz , which released three studio albums and several EPs between 1998 and 2004. In 2003 he moved from Fredericksburg to Brooklyn , started a small guitar effects pedals company called Death by Audio, and began working with A Place to Bury Strangers. After the original bassist Tim Gregorio and drummer Justin Avery left the band, Jonathan "Jono Mofo" Smith (bass) and Jason "Jay Space" Weilmeister (drums) joined. The trio recorded three EPs on their own and soon earned the reputation of being "New York's loudest band" at their shows. As support for The Jesus and Mary Chain you could also perform with one of the groups that influenced A Place to Bury Strangers significantly.

In 2007 the self-titled debut album was released, which was positively received by the press. After a joint tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club , A Place to Bury Strangers gave several concerts in 2008 as a support act for Nine Inch Nails . In 2009 the label Mute signed the band and released the second album Exploding Head in the same year . A few months later, Jono Mofo left the group before a planned tour with The Big Pink . He was replaced by Dion Lunadon from New Zealand , who is also known because of his participation in the band The D4 (there under the name Dion Palmer).

In 2012 there was another line-up change when Robi Gonzalez took over the drums for Jay Space. Shortly thereafter, the EP Onwards to the Wall was released on the Dead Oceans label, followed by the single You Are the One and the third album Worship . In the same year A Place to Bury Strangers released a split single with Ceremony , the new band of Paul Baker and John Fedowitz (which Baker has since left, he has been active with the Static Daydream project ever since ). In 2013 the EP Strange Moon came out for Record Store Day , which only contains cover versions of songs by the group Dead Moon . During the same period, recordings began for the fourth album Transfixiation , the release of which was announced in November 2014 for February 17, 2015. In 2017 the band took part in the musician project Our First 100 Days .

In spring 2018 the fifth album Pinned was released , with Lia Simone Braswell on drums instead of Robi Gonzalez. The remix album Re-Pinned followed in autumn .
